What are the three main types of Leather finish?

Pigmented, Semi-Aniline and Aniline leather, are all types of finished leather. But they differ in their characteristics and the properties they have.

Aniline leather is the most natural and softest type of leather. While Pigmented leather is the most durable and resistant to staining and fading. Semi-aniline leather falls somewhere in-between, offering a balance of a natural hand feel and durability.

Here’s a brief overview of each type of leather finish and when you might consider using it;

PIGMENTED LEATHER:

Pigmented leather is treated with a thicker, coloured coating that covers the natural grain and texture of the leather. A textured pattern is often then applied afterwards giving a more uniform and colour consistent appearance. This coating also makes Pigmented leather more resistant to stains, fading and easier to clean. Pigmented leather can be a more cost-effective option than Semi-aniline leather. This is a good choice for those who want a more durability, or a more uniform look.

SEMI-ANILINE LEATHER:

Semi-aniline leather is treated with a light surface coating to protect it while still allowing the natural grain and texture of the leather to show through. It’s generally more expensive than Pigmented leather because it’s made from higher quality hides and requires more time and skill to produce. Semi-aniline leather is a good choice for those who want a natural, high-quality look and feel, but want a more durable and stain-resistant leather. At Crest Leather we’ve used proprietary technology to create a range of products with the natural feel and texture of a Semi-aniline product but with the protection of a Pigmented leather.

ANILINE LEATHER:

Aniline leather is leather that has been dyed with aniline dye, which is transparent and allows the natural grain and texture of the leather to show through. It’s generally the most expensive and high-quality type of leather, but it’s also the most delicate and prone to staining and fading. Aniline leather is a good choice for those who want a more natural, high-quality traditional leather look and feel and are willing to take extra care to protect it.

Which leather finish is best for me?

In terms of application, we would generally recommend our Pigmented and Semi-Anilines for more high-traffic areas. These include bars, restaurants, cafes, offices spaces and hotels too. Our Aniline ranges for residential settings. Ultimately though, the type of leather you choose will depend on your personal preference, and the intended use.
